ISLAMABAD: Participants of the United Nations Programme of Fellowships on Disarmament, visiting Pakistan from October 20-23, 2024, met with officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning. They received a briefing from Ambassador Tahir Andrabi, the Director General for Arms Control and Disarmament, who outlined Pakistan’s position on arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation. He also highlighted the significance of unrestricted access to dual-use technologies for peaceful socio-economic purposes.UNESCO adopts Pakistan-led resolution

The UN Disarmament Fellows, representing 25 countries, are in Pakistan as part of their international study tour. This visit, organized by the Government of Pakistan in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), aims to educate international diplomats about Pakistan’s policies and institutional frameworks related to arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation.

During their time in Pakistan, the fellows will visit several key sites, including the Pakistan Centre of Excellence on Nuclear Security (PCENS), the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology (PINSTECH), the Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) in Wah Cantt, the Heavy Mechanical Complex (HMC) in Taxila, the National Centre for Physics (NCP), and the Centre for International Strategic Studies (CISS).

At PCENS, participants will receive in-depth briefings on Pakistan’s nuclear safety and security measures, regulatory frameworks, and safeguards aligned with international standards recognized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). At PINSTECH, they will observe the Pakistan Atomic Research Reactor and explore the peaceful applications of nuclear technology in areas such as health, industry, agriculture, food security, and power generation.

Established in 1978, the United Nations Programme of Fellowships on Disarmament is a prestigious initiative by UNODA that provides valuable training and exposure to young professionals. This is the second time Pakistan is hosting the international study tour for UN Disarmament Fellows.
