The formal signing ceremony took place at the Pakistan Pavilion during the UN-led Global Climate Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The agreement was signed by Aisha Humera Moriani, Secretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, and Helena McLeod, Deputy Director-General of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).
In her remarks, Romina Khurshid Alam, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, expressed her appreciation to GGGI for its continued engagement with Pakistan. She highlighted the initiative’s role in helping the country mobilize green finance, support climate action policy frameworks, and attract investment to enhance climate resilience and environmental sustainability.
Aligned with the GGGI Strategy 2030 and Pakistan’s national priorities, the CPF will focus on strengthening climate resilience, improving sustainable agriculture, and fostering inclusive economic growth through innovative solutions.
Outlining the key objectives of the agreement, GGGI’s Deputy Director-General McLeod emphasized that the organization’s efforts will support Pakistan’s transition to a green economy. She noted that the collaboration will address critical challenges such as water scarcity, deforestation, and energy inefficiency, which have been exacerbated by climate change.
Earlier, a joint event titled “Pakistan’s NDC Technology Roadmap for the Waste and Water Sector to Leverage Climate Finance” was organized by the Ministry of Climate Change, the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), and GGGI at the Pakistan Pavilion. The event brought together experts from various international organizations focused on climate finance and environmental sustainability.
The NDC Technology Roadmap for the waste and water sectors is a key part of Pakistan’s strategy to meet its climate targets under the Paris Agreement. The initiative, supported by GGGI, aims to create actionable pathways for leveraging climate finance and scaling up investments in the waste and water sectors.
Addressing the gathering, Romina Khurshid Alam explained that the NDC Technology Roadmap would serve as a strategic planning tool to connect Pakistan’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with large-scale investment opportunities. This would enable the country to transform its climate targets into tangible outcomes.
She further emphasized the essential role of technology in implementing climate change policies, stressing that the NDC Roadmap for the waste and water sectors is critical for achieving Pakistan’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
Alam also discussed key areas such as technology needs assessment, innovation, research, regulatory frameworks, and funding mechanisms that are crucial for achieving Pakistan’s waste and water-related climate goals. She highlighted how these efforts would contribute to advancing Pakistan’s broader climate commitments and progress towards its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The collaboration between the Ministry of Climate Change and GGGI is expected to play a vital role in Pakistan’s efforts to integrate climate action into its national development strategy, ensuring a sustainable and resilient future for the country.
