Minister Reaffirms Pakistan’s Commitment to Sustainability on Zero Waste Day

ISLAMABAD: On this International Day of Zero Waste, Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal, the Minister of State for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

The International Day of Zero Waste, is celebrated annually on 30 March worldwide to shed spotlight on both the importance of sustainable waste management globally and the need to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns.

In her message regarding the international day, Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal emphasized that transitioning to a circular economy is not only crucial for environmental preservation but also key to fostering long-term economic growth. “The challenges posed by waste management, including plastic pollution and food waste, demand comprehensive solutions across various sectors,” said Dr. Kharal. “Our goal is to integrate sustainability into every aspect of daily life, from production to consumption, while promoting responsible waste reduction practices.”

The Minister highlighted that Pakistan is already taking significant strides toward addressing these challenges. The upcoming National Policy on Circular Economy will provide a strategic framework for tackling waste across industries. At the same time, the government is working to strengthen waste management infrastructure, promote recycling initiatives, and increase public awareness about reducing consumption.

“Projects such as Living Indus, recognized by the United Nations for its contributions to ecosystem restoration, and the National Action Roadmap on Plastic Pollution, are prime examples of our efforts to foster a more sustainable future,” Dr. Kharal continued. “These initiatives are not only helping to reduce waste but also contributing to the restoration of natural resources that are essential for Pakistan’s wellbeing.”

The government’s commitment to implementing policies that encourage sustainable production and eco-friendly alternatives will play a vital role in reducing waste. “By tackling waste management across all sectors, we can build a cleaner, greener Pakistan,” Dr. Kharal said. “Today, as we observe the International Day of Zero Waste, we are reminded of the collective potential of government, civil society, and businesses to drive meaningful and lasting change.”

Dr. Kharal closed her message by calling on all citizens to join in Pakistan’s mission to reduce waste and create a sustainable future for generations to come. “Together, we can make a significant difference. Let this day inspire each of us to take action and play a role in building a more sustainable world.”
