WhatsApp Adds Manual Night Mode for Clearer Low-Light Shots
WhatsApp is testing a new night mode for its in-app camera in an effort to improve photo quality in dimly lit environments, according to its latest Android beta update.
As reported by WABetaInfo, a platform known for tracking WhatsApp developments, the feature has been released to a limited group of Android beta users and is expected to become more widely available in the coming weeks through the Google Play Store.
The new addition features a moon-shaped icon at the top of the camera screen. This icon becomes visible when the app detects low-light surroundings. Users can manually activate the feature to enhance brightness and clarity when capturing photos in darker conditions.
Rather than relying on filters, the feature applies software-based improvements, such as increasing exposure and reducing image noise. This allows photos taken in indoor settings or at night to appear clearer and more detailed without altering natural colors.
In contrast to some smartphone camera apps that switch automatically to night mode, WhatsApp’s version requires user input. This gives individuals more control over when and where to use the function, especially in situations where lighting conditions vary.
Despite these improvements, the feature is not designed to perform in extremely dark settings where minimal visibility exists. It offers better performance in moderately low-light areas rather than complete darkness.
