Ushna Shah Sparks Debate Over Sympathy for Slain US Conservative

Pakistani actress Ushna Shah has defended her decision to express condolences after the killing of American conservative figure Charlie Kirk, saying empathy should not be limited by politics.
Kirk, 31, head of the activist group Turning Point USA, was shot dead while addressing students in Utah on September 10. His death shocked the US political scene and reignited debates on gun violence.
Shah responded on Instagram, calling the killing “heartbreaking.” She noted that while she strongly opposed Kirk’s political views, particularly on Palestine, his death as a young husband and father was a human tragedy.

The post prompted fierce reactions. Critics argued that her support for Palestine was undermined by extending sympathy to Kirk, who held controversial positions on the Middle East and other issues. Some accused her of normalising his politics, while others praised her for showing compassion beyond ideology.
In a follow-up, Shah stressed that her statement was not political. “Recognizing suffering, even when you disagree with someone’s politics, is about humanity, not politics,” she said.
The controversy underscores the risks celebrities face in navigating political and humanitarian commentary. Analysts say her remarks reflect a broader tension in online discourse, where expressions of empathy are often interpreted through partisan lenses.
