Sindh Opens Museums for Free This August

In celebration of 77th Independence Day, the Sindh government has announced free access to all provincial museums and heritage sites from August 1 to 14. The initiative aims to promote public engagement with the region’s cultural and historical legacy.

The announcement was made by the Sindh Culture, Tourism, Antiquities and Archives Department. Officials hope the gesture will encourage citizens to explore museums, archaeological landmarks, and cultural centres during the national festivities.

This year’s Independence Day theme, “Marka-e-Haq,” pays tribute to the armed forces and reflects on the country’s military response during Operation Banyanum Marsoos. The theme is intended to honour national unity and resilience.

Major museums participating in the free-entry campaign include the Quaid-i-Azam House Museum in Karachi, Mohenjo Daro, the Sindh Provincial Museum in Hyderabad, and the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Museum in Larkana. Other sites such as Kot Diji Museum, Umarkot Fort, and Bhit Shah Cultural Centre are also included.

Heritage monuments like the Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta and ancient archaeological sites such as Bhanbhore and Mohenjo Daro will be open to the public without charge.

The province is also offering a 50% discount on books and publications available at official outlets. The Archives Gallery in Karachi, which showcases rare historical documents and photographs, will be accessible free of cost.

Art enthusiasts can attend exhibitions at Sambara Art Gallery in Karachi and Zafar Kazmi Art Gallery in Hyderabad at no cost.

Cultural festivities will include grand musical performances in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur, featuring popular singers and performers. Public spaces and historic buildings will be decorated with lights and national flags.

The initiative follows directives from Sindh’s Chief Minister and was finalized during a meeting chaired by Provincial Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah, with senior officials from the archaeology and tourism departments also present.
