Shaza announces formation of National Digital Commission
ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunications, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, has announced the establishment of a National Digital Commission (NDC) to advance the vision of Digital Pakistan.
Speaking at the National Broadband Forum in Islamabad today, she shared that legislation to formalize the NDC will be introduced in the National Assembly later this evening.Shaza Fatima Approves Rs. 599.29 Million for Ignite, E-Sports Competition
She outlined that the Commission will be chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with members including provincial chief ministers and representatives from key regulatory bodies such as NADRA and PTA.
Additionally, she announced plans to establish the Pakistan Digital Authority, tasked with developing a comprehensive national framework and master plan for digital transformation. The Authority will focus on three priority areas: economy, governance, and society.
Shaza Fatima revealed that 4G and 5G spectrum auctions are scheduled for April next year, a step expected to significantly enhance internet services across the country. She noted that improved internet availability and investment in telecom infrastructure will address the challenges faced by freelancers and IT professionals, particularly slow internet speeds.
The Minister expressed optimism that these initiatives will unlock Pakistan’s potential in a world increasingly driven by technology.
Addressing the forum, Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani emphasized the importance of fostering public-private partnerships to accelerate digital development and ensure the effective adoption of advanced technologies.
He highlighted the growing demand for connectivity alongside population growth and stressed the need to bridge the digital divide by providing high-quality broadband access to all citizens.
The Chairman urged stakeholders to work collaboratively to ensure every school has high-speed internet, individuals can engage in the digital economy, and businesses can thrive, even in rural areas.
He concluded by stating that the Broadband Forum will serve as a platform for collaboration and the development of effective strategies to drive digital progress in Pakistan.
