Samsung has fundamentally reworked its DeX platform with the rollout of One UI 8, reshaping how tablet users interact with the feature. In earlier versions, Samsung DeX transformed Galaxy tablets into a desktop-like environment with a taskbar, quick settings shortcuts, and app icons arranged like a PC. A user poll highlighted in coverage of the release found that 82 percent of respondents were dissatisfied with the removal of the classic DeX interface on tablets. Critics argue that the new design is less mouse-friendly and lament that the option to revert to the traditional desktop layout has been removed, leaving the new system as the only choice.

The redesign reflects a broader strategic shift by Samsung. By aligning DeX with Google’s native Android Desktop Mode, the company is focusing on external monitor integration and cross-device consistency rather than maintaining a standalone desktop platform for tablets.
