Rwanda High Commissioner meets Commerce minister, new business horizons unveiled

ISLAMABAD:  The High Commissioner of Rwanda to Pakistan, Fatou Harerimana, met with Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, to discuss opportunities for opening new trade markets and strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

This meeting marks an important step as Rwanda’s first High Commissioner to Pakistan seeks to enhance economic cooperation following the establishment of Rwanda’s embassy in Islamabad, according to a press release.Fashion and Design Innovation Discussed: Prof. Hina Meets Commerce Minister

Minister Khan highlighted Rwanda’s economic potential, noting that although direct trade with Pakistan is still in its early stages, Rwanda’s growing GDP is on par with Ethiopia’s, making it an appealing market for trade relations.

Emphasizing the need for a broader East African Community (EAC) trade forum in Islamabad, Minister Jam proposed that the event be co-chaired by the President of the EAC and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with trade ministers from EAC member states in attendance.

“There is immense potential for mutual trade benefits. For example, Rwanda could export tea to Pakistan, while Pakistan could supply rice to Rwanda,” Minister Jam said.

He also suggested identifying key business sectors and bringing together stakeholders under Pakistan’s “Look Africa Policy.” He pointed out opportunities in areas like power, agricultural machinery, food, and pharmaceuticals.

The minister encouraged collaboration between the chambers of commerce in both countries to facilitate matchmaking among business communities.

He further stressed that high-level interactions between heads of state would play a crucial role in strengthening ties. During the planned EAC Business Forum, Minister Khan proposed that several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements could be signed, laying the foundation for long-term partnerships.

Rwanda’s High Commissioner, Fatou Harerimana, expressed interest in Pakistan’s electric bikes and automobile industry, signaling a new trade opportunity.

Minister Khan also informed her about Pakistan’s advancements in mobile phone manufacturing, with 13 companies currently operating in the sector. He highlighted Pakistan’s expertise in electric bikes, footwear, and textiles, which could be promising industries for trade with Rwanda.

“Pakistani tractors, known for being cost-effective and energy-efficient, are already making a mark in Africa. These could prove valuable for Rwanda as well,” the minister added.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to exploring new markets and enhancing economic cooperation. Minister Jam Kamal assured that he would write to the EAC member states and the President of the EAC to ensure that the proposed business forum takes place.

The meeting emphasized the potential for Pakistan and Rwanda to build a dynamic trade partnership, capitalizing on each other’s strengths and opening new paths for economic growth.
