Govt committed to mitigate negative impacts of climate change: Romina

ISLAMABAD: The Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, has called on the Sindh and Balochistan governments to enhance their efforts in preserving marine ecosystems. In light of the recent designation of Churna Island as a Marine Protected Area by the Balochistan government, she advocated for the establishment of more Marine Protected Areas to meet the global goal of safeguarding 30% of the oceanic area by 2030.

Alam commended the Balochistan government’s initiative to protect Churna Island, describing it as a “constructive step towards preserving marine resources and fostering environmentally sustainable development.”

She also extended her full support to the Balochistan government in efforts to maintain marine biodiversity and protect the island’s delicate ecosystem and varied wildlife. Alam stressed the importance of shielding marine environments and wildlife from the effects of climate change and human activities, underscoring the need for collective action and shared responsibility in tackling these environmental issues.

Romina Khurshid Alam noted that this initiative will assist in managing human activities that threaten marine ecosystems and will help protect the islands from dangers such as overfishing, pollution, and climate change impacts.
