Islamabad: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has announced a significant change to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program, extending its duration from four years to five years.
In a press release, PM&DC President, Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj, emphasized the importance of this change, citing the challenges faced by Pakistani BDS graduates in securing international training and employment opportunities, which often require a five-year BDS qualification. He explained that starting with the 2024-2025 academic session, the BDS program in Pakistan will now include a fifth-year clerkship, followed by a mandatory one-year structured house job or internship.Painkillers and Antibiotics Lead Pharma Market Amid Health Challenges
To align the qualifications of dental graduates from the existing four-year BDS program with international standards and the newly restructured five-year program, universities have been instructed to issue revised five-year transcripts, including the house job as the clerkship year, to graduates who request it.
Dr. Taj further highlighted that the additional academic year will enable students to gain a more comprehensive understanding of dental sciences, enhancing their theoretical and practical knowledge. Extended clinical training will better prepare graduates to address real-world dental challenges effectively and confidently.
This reform aims to align Pakistan’s dental education system with international benchmarks, increasing global recognition of Pakistani graduates. The updated program will equip students with advanced skills and knowledge, bolstering their competitiveness in both domestic and international healthcare sectors.
Additionally, the PM&DC has finalized detailed curriculum guidelines, which will soon be shared with dental colleges nationwide. The Council is working closely with institutions to ensure the smooth implementation of the new program structure. This initiative represents a crucial step toward developing highly skilled dental professionals capable of meeting the evolving needs of healthcare both within Pakistan and globally.
