PM Set to Participate in UN Assembly Session

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif will participate in the high-level segment of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from September 23 to 27, 2024, in New York.

In his speech at the UN General Assembly on September 27, 2024, the Prime Minister will reaffirm Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism and support for the United Nations’ role in promoting global peace, security, and prosperity. He will stress the importance of addressing longstanding issues on the UN Security Council’s agenda, such as the Palestine issue and the Jammu & Kashmir conflict.

PM Shehbaz received a telephone call from His Majesty King Charles III.

The Prime Minister will highlight the necessity of addressing disparities in international economic relations and reforming the global financial system. He will also call on the international community to take decisive actions to combat climate change and counter the growing wave of Islamophobia.

During the UNGA session, the Prime Minister will attend several high-level meetings, including the “High-Level Meeting on the Existential Threat of Sea-Level Rise” and the UN Security Council’s Open Debate on “Leadership for Peace.” He will engage with a group of world leaders to discuss global measures needed to advance the sustainable development agenda. His schedule will include bilateral discussions with several global leaders, including the UN Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly.

The UN General Assembly’s High-Level segment provides a vital platform for Pakistan to present its viewpoints on significant regional and international matters. The Prime Minister will emphasize Pakistan’s priority to focus on people in the domestic and global development agenda. He will also convey Pakistan’s commitment, as an incoming member of the UN Security Council for 2025-26, to collaborate with all UN Member States in upholding the UN Charter, preventing conflict, fostering peace, and promoting global prosperity.
