Pakistan’s Rice Exports Up 21.78%, Lead in Premium Markets
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s rice exports surged by 21.78% in the first nine months of FY2024-25, defying expectations of a downturn following India’s return to the global rice market. Rather than competing on price, Pakistani exporters focused on quality, especially in basmati rice, securing a dominant 67% share in premium markets like the EU and UK. Despite challenges in non-basmati exports due to local supply constraints, Pakistan managed to boost shipments through efficient supply chain strategies and market targeting.
Stable currency performance, strategic market positioning, and premium product quality contributed to the sector’s success. Experts view this as a model for how developing countries can leverage strengths in times of global volatility.
However, risks such as India’s production capacity and climate change persist. Sustained growth will depend on continued investment in quality improvements, climate resilience, and supportive government policies.CCP approves acquisition of Engro Eximp Agriproducts by MAP Rice Mills
