Karachi on Flood Alert as Storms Loom
Karachi is on high alert as the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms between September 7 and 9. With strong winds and high humidity expected, city authorities warn of possible urban flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
According to the Met Office, a new weather system is expected to hit the southern region, bringing widespread showers and gusty winds. Given Karachi’s history of inadequate drainage, clogged sewerage, and delayed response systems, the upcoming rainfall may overwhelm infrastructure once again.
“Urban flooding is a serious risk,” warned officials, noting that key neighborhoods—such as Saddar, Korangi, Malir, and parts of Gulshan-e-Iqbal—have been vulnerable in the past.

Despite the expected downpour, temperatures in Karachi will remain high, with the mercury touching 35°C, adding to the humidity and general discomfort for residents. Power outages, traffic disruptions, and waterlogging are likely if drainage systems fail to cope.
Authorities have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, steer clear of waterlogged zones, and keep emergency supplies on hand. Municipal teams have been placed on standby, though residents remain skeptical due to past delays in response.
The rain threat will likely persist until the end of the week. If rainfall exceeds forecast levels, Karachi could face major disruption, again highlighting the city’s urgent need for infrastructure reform and better disaster preparedness.
