India’s Water Release Triggers Chenab River Flood Alert

The Chenab River has swelled to medium flood levels following India’s release of water, according to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Flood Forecasting Division (FFD).

The river’s water flow at Marala Headworks surged to 176,000 cusecs, nearly tripling in just two days. Previously, the water level stood at 70,000 cusecs. The rapid increase has raised concerns over potential flooding in parts of Punjab.

Officials have warned that the rising water may submerge large stretches of farmland in districts including Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Chiniot, and Jhang. Authorities have been urged to prepare for possible evacuations and property damage.

The FFD has forecast medium to high-level flooding at Marala Barrage over the next 24 hours, with moderate flooding likely at Khanki and Qadirabad headworks. A flood warning was previously issued to local administrations to brace for high river flows.

Looking ahead, weather experts predict another monsoon system may develop by August 5, potentially pushing water levels higher in the Indus River and other major water bodies across the country.

Disaster management agencies have been directed to stay alert, particularly in flood-prone areas. Farmers and residents living near the Chenab River have also been advised to remain vigilant and follow official updates.
