Govt Launches Nationwide Shift to AMI Smart Meters
The federal government has announced a nationwide plan to replace conventional three-phase electricity meters with advanced AMI smart meters by December 2026. Officials say the project will reduce power theft, improve billing accuracy, and end the long-standing issue of inflated electricity bills.
The initiative will begin with the installation of 350,000 meters in the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) area. According to the Ministry of Power Division, all distribution companies have received directives to ensure phased rollout.

Smart meters will allow real-time monitoring of electricity use, making it easier to identify theft and billing irregularities. Consumers are expected to benefit from greater transparency and accurate bills, reducing disputes between households and power companies.
While the initial cost runs into billions of rupees, officials argue the benefits will outweigh expenses. “This is a game-changer for Pakistan’s energy sector,” one ministry official said.
