Gas Sector Overview 2024-25
Staff Report
Islamabad: The average natural gas consumption was about 3,143 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD), including 798 MMCFD of RLNG, during July–March FY2025. During this period, 13,591 additional gas connections—including 11,755 domestic, 1,786 commercial, and 50 industrial—were provided across the country.
According to Economic Survey 2024-25, the highest gas consumption was recorded in the power sector, domestic sector, and fertilizer industry, at 973 MMCFD, 777 MMCFD, and 764 MMCFD, respectively. During the same period, two gas utility companies (SNGPL & SSGCL) laid 1,221 km of mains and 65 km of service lines and connected 84 villages/towns to the gas network. Natural gas is a clean, safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly fuel. Its indigenous supplies contributed about 29.3 percent (FY2024) to the total primary energy supply mix of the country. Pakistan has an extensive gas network of over 14,276 km transmission, 162,031 km mains, and 41,577 km service pipelines, catering to the requirements of more than 10.7 million consumers across the country.
The government is pursuing policies to enhance indigenous gas production as well as imports to meet the increasing energy demand. At present, the capacity of two FSRUs to re-gasify Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) is 1,200 MMCFD, and accordingly, RLNG is being imported to mitigate the gas demand-supply shortfall.
COAL
Coal is an important source of energy. In Pakistan, the power sector consumes a significant share of coal for electricity generation. Indigenous coal resources are reasonably substantial and sufficient to meet the country’s requirements on a long-term, sustainable basis.
Domestic coal production is expected to increase in the coming years, starting with mining activity at Thar Coalfield Block-I and expansion at Block-II. Indigenous coal is mainly consumed by power generation plants located at Thar, while coal from other fields is used in brick kilns. Additionally, power plants and the industrial sector consume imported coal.
During July–March FY2025, the power sector accounted for approximately 69.7 percent (11,278.7 thousand tonnes) of total coal consumption. The brick kiln sector consumed 14.2 percent (2,292.3 thousand tonnes), while the cement and other industries consumed 16.1 percent (2,600.0 thousand tonnes).
