upgradation of Korangi fisheries harbour to strengthen Pakistan’s blue economy

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, has directed the Korangi Fisheries Harbour Authority (KoFHA) to undergo a comprehensive upgrade to align with international benchmarks and boost the country’s seafood export potential.

These instructions were given during a meeting in Islamabad today, where the minister met with KoFHA’s Managing Director, Dr. Shahid Mirza.

The Korangi Fisheries Harbour Authority, operating under the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, is a vital maritime entity located in Karachi. It oversees the Korangi Fisheries Harbour — an industrial fisheries hub aimed at advancing Pakistan’s seafood trade and contributing to the national economy.

Minister Chaudhry underlined the pressing need to improve both the infrastructure and operational framework of the harbour to comply with global standards in seafood processing, handling, and exporting. He emphasized that modernization is not only critical for enhancing export quality but also for ensuring better working conditions for the local fishing workforce.

“The international seafood industry requires top-tier quality and standards. During the session, Dr. Shahid Mirza provided the minister with an overview of KoFHA’s current status and reaffirmed the authority’s full commitment to turning the harbour into a cutting-edge facility that meets global health, safety, and quality standards.

The minister also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting the local business sector, especially focusing on the well-being of fishermen, who are the cornerstone of the maritime economy. He instructed KoFHA to introduce programs that benefit fishermen by offering improved access to cold storage facilities, sanitary auction areas, advanced processing units, and financial education initiatives.
