ISLAMABAD: A high-level review session, led by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, was convened to evaluate the restoration and expansion plans for the nationwide GT Road (N-5). During the meeting, it was resolved that the project will be carried out in two distinct phases, transforming the GT Road into a standardized three-lane highway, aligned with motorway specifications.

Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan highlighted that the primary goal of this large-scale initiative is to establish a consistent, high-standard roadway throughout the entire stretch of the GT Road.

Top officials from the Ministry of Communications, the Planning Commission, the Economic Affairs Division, and the Chairman of the National Highway Authority (NHA), along with other essential stakeholders, shared practical suggestions for the refurbishment and extension of the N-5.

The Minister instructed all relevant authorities to examine every viable option for enhancing this historic and strategically critical national route. He remarked that past investments in unsustainable projects had led to financial setbacks for the government, whereas the current emphasis on motorways is expected to deliver long-term economic benefits.

Abdul Aleem Khan reaffirmed that the redevelopment of the N-5 stands as a top government priority. He revealed that a well-planned, two-phase approach has been formulated for its execution.

Additionally, he announced his intention to personally visit the project locations along the N-5 and directed the NHA Chairman and other senior department officials to conduct site inspections at different stages of development to ensure tangible progress.

Throughout the meeting, senior officials presented proposals tailored to the currently available financial resources for the GT Road’s improvement. The Federal Minister reiterated the importance of district-wise rehabilitation to ease travel burdens for the public. It was also confirmed that the first phase of the N-5 upgrade and rehabilitation is expected to be finalized by the close of the current fiscal year.
