COMSATS Professor Under Fire for Publicly Shaming Student Over Laptop
A senior professor at COMSATS University in Lahore has come under intense criticism after a video surfaced online showing him publicly shaming a student during a lecture.
Dr. Tayyab Chaudhary, a faculty member at the university, was recorded berating a student for not bringing a laptop to class on 19 June. According to eyewitnesses, the professor not only questioned the student’s preparedness but also made harsh remarks about his financial background.
The professor allegedly demanded the student call his elder brother during the lecture and instructed him to arrange a laptop through zakat – a form of Islamic charity meant for the underprivileged. The video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread condemnation.
Student groups described the episode as humiliating and emotionally traumatic. They claim that Dr. Chaudhary crossed professional boundaries by mocking the student’s personal and family circumstances in front of classmates.
Several students reportedly filed complaints with senior university staff, including the Head of Department. However, they allege that their concerns were dismissed, with one faculty member allegedly suggesting the professor may have been under stress.
Following the uproar, students have accused the professor of retaliating by reducing the grades of the entire class. They argue that this reflects a pattern of behaviour, as past complaints had also surfaced against the same professor involving verbal abuse and intimidation.
