Book Banks to Ease Parents’ Burden in Islamabad
Parents in Islamabad could soon find relief from the annual cost of textbooks. The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has directed all model schools and colleges to establish book banks from the 2026–27 session.
Through the new system, textbooks provided free by the government will be reused. Students will return them at the end of the academic year, before final exam results are declared. The collected books will then be redistributed to incoming classes, ensuring a continuous supply without added expense.
According to FDE officials, book banks will address recurring textbook shortages while reducing pressure on parents struggling with rising education costs. The system will also help cut down on paper printing, contributing to environmental protection.

Schools have been asked to create standard procedures for the collection and categorization of books, while Area Education Officers will supervise and maintain accountability.
Officials believe the initiative will build a culture of sharing knowledge and responsibility among students. It is also expected to instill discipline, as learners will be motivated to keep their books in good condition for the next batch.
The directive, signed by Assistant Director (Academics) Abid Ali Khan, signals a wider effort by the government to reform the education system and improve resource management.
