BCCI Approves Betting Ads, Bans Crypto In IPL. Is This A Double Standard?

ISLAMABAD: As IPL 2025 approaches, controversy surrounds the decision of BCCI to ban cryptocurrency ads while endorsing Dream11.

The move has sparked criticism from the cryptocurrency community, which views it as hypocritical.

BCCI’s blanket ban targets advertisements for tobacco, alcohol, and cryptocurrencies, citing concerns from the Union Health Ministry about the impact these ads could have on the youth.

However, no clear explanation has been given for including cryptocurrencies in this restriction, especially since both cryptocurrencies and Dream11 operate under the same 30% tax rate in India.

Dream11, despite being linked to online gambling, has managed to secure a sponsorship deal worth ₹358 crore ($41.44 million) with BCCI until 2026.

The platform has been classified as a “skill-based game” by the Supreme Court, which allows it to continue its association with the Indian cricket team.

This legal distinction has further added to the debate, as both crypto and fantasy sports platforms face the same taxation.

While gambling platforms like Dream11 contribute to India’s growing entertainment industry, concerns over their impact on the younger population have also surfaced.

The ease of access to gambling apps, including Dream11, has led to an increase in loans and defaults, with reports linking it to a rise in suicides and other extreme consequences.

This policy discrepancy has left many questioning why crypto ads have been singled out, especially when other sectors with similar risks are not facing similar restrictions.

As the crypto industry continues to grow in India, BCCI’s decision seems to highlight a broader issue of regulation in both the digital currency and gambling sectors.
