AWSN Launches Women’s Channel as Saudi Pushes Vision 2030

The All Women’s Sports Network (AWSN), co-founded by Hollywood star Whoopi Goldberg, will make its Middle East debut with the launch of a 24-hour women’s sports channel in Saudi Arabia on Friday.

The new channel, SSC AWSN, will stream on MBC’s Shahid platform and broadcast the Saudi Women’s Premier League, UEFA tournaments, and other international women’s sporting events.

AWSN was launched in 2023 as the first global media platform dedicated to women’s sports. Its Saudi entry marks a significant milestone for the kingdom, where women’s access to sports was restricted until recent reforms lifted bans on school participation and stadium attendance.

Aalia Al Rasheed, head of women’s football at the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, hailed the launch as “a transformative milestone” that would give female athletes global recognition.

The move comes as Saudi Arabia continues its Vision 2030 program, aimed at diversifying the economy and increasing international investment. Officials say showcasing women’s sports is part of that broader effort to modernize and create new industries.

AWSN CEO George Chung said the partnership would give Saudi women “unprecedented exposure” while introducing global leagues to Saudi audiences.

With the Women’s Premier League gaining international players and fans, the partnership is seen as both a symbolic and practical step in positioning Saudi Arabia as a rising hub for women’s sports in the region.
