Advanced persistent threats target one in four companies in 2024

Islamabad: The latest Kaspersky Managed Detection and Response (MDR) analyst report reveals that advanced persistent threats (APTs), identified as human-driven attacks, have been found in 25% of organizations, representing over 43% of all critical incidents. This marks an alarming 74% increase compared to 2023 and a 43% rise from 2022.

The annual MDR analyst report offers insights derived from Kaspersky’s Security Operations Center team’s analysis of MDR incidents. It highlights the most common tactics, techniques, and tools used by attackers, as well as the nature of the incidents and their distribution across industries and regions among MDR clients.Army Chief Asim Munir Asserts Nation’s Full Readiness to Defend Sovereignty and Integrity

Despite progress in automated detection methods, persistent attackers continue to exploit vulnerabilities and bypass these systems. APTs were observed in all sectors except telecommunications, with the IT and government sectors being the most affected.

Furthermore, incidents categorized as human-driven attacks, confirmed as cyber exercises by customers, made up over 17% of all incidents. Serious breaches of security policies accounted for around 12% of high-severity events, while malware-related incidents also represented more than 12%, particularly impacting the financial, industrial, and IT sectors.

“In 2024, we witnessed a notable increase in Advanced Persistent Threats. This concerning trend underlines that even with advances in automated detection, determined human-driven attacks continue to exploit vulnerabilities across multiple sectors. Organizations must improve their readiness and invest in robust cybersecurity strategies to combat these sophisticated threats,” says Sergey Soldatov, Head of Kaspersky’s Security Operations Center.

For companies lacking cybersecurity expertise, Kaspersky offers Managed Detection and Response and Incident Response services to investigate incidents and provide expert assistance. These services cover the entire incident management process, from threat identification to ongoing protection and remediation, enabling organizations to defend against even the most evasive cyber threats.
