Above-Average Rainfall Sparks River and Urban Flood Warnings

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast that the current spell of monsoon rains will continue for another two days, raising concerns over possible flooding across multiple regions. The warning comes as the country experiences higher-than-average rainfall for the month of July.

According to officials, rainfall across Pakistan in July was 25% above the monthly average. However, Sindh province recorded a deficit, receiving less rain than usual.

Meteorologists have cautioned that August is also expected to bring above-normal rainfall, particularly affecting cities and riverbanks already prone to flooding. Authorities are urging citizens to remain alert and follow advisories issued by local administrations.

In Punjab, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued flood alerts for major rivers, including the Chenab and Jhelum. Between July 30 and 31, moderate flooding is likely in these waterways, with additional water flow expected in rivers linked to the Ravi. The Sutlej River near Ganda Singh is forecast to experience a notable surge in water levels within the next 24 hours.

The PDMA has also warned of urban flooding in several cities such as Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Gujranwala. Heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours could overwhelm drainage systems, particularly in densely populated areas.

Commissioners across various divisions—Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal—have been placed on high alert. The Punjab Relief Commissioner has instructed all relevant agencies to stay on standby and ensure a swift response in case of emergencies.
