Rawalpindi Weather Alert: City Flooded, More Storms Ahead

RAWALPINDI – As relentless monsoon rain continues, there have been reports of urban flooding, casualties, and infrastructural damage across Rawalpindi and its adjoining areas.

The situation becomes critical and there are more fears of rain and possible thunderstorms in the coming days.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and rescue officials have been put on igh alert as over 230 mm of rainfall poured down within 15 hours to flood the Rawalpindi. Nullah Leh is surging to dangerous levels and people are afraid of more damages.

Low-lying areas including Morgah, Gowalmandi, Dhamial, Katarian, and Dhoke Hassu were inundated. They have displaced residents and straining emergency services.

According to the PMD and other leading weather sources, Rawalpindi will continue to suffer due to unstable weather throughout the next 5 days:

•             Friday, July 18: Mostly sunny and humid, high near 91°F (33°C). Slight risk (40%) of isolated showers in the evening.

•             Saturday, July 19: Hazy sunshine, high humidity. Temperatures may surge to 94°F (34°C). Rain chances are low.

•             Sunday, July 20: A thunderstorm is likely in the morning, followed by intermittent rain. High: 95°F (35°C).

•             Monday, July 21: Partly sunny and uncomfortably humid. High around 93°F (34°C).

•             Tuesday–Wednesday, July 22–23: Heavy showers likely in the morning hours, especially on July 23. Highs between 84–86°F (29–30°C).

Rain Destruction: 33 Dead in Punjab, Rawalpindi Hit Hardest

Emergency services report reveal around 33 people dead across Punjab, including multiple casualties in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. In twin cities, streets have turned into fast-moving streams. Many victims were electrocuted or swept away by floodwaters. NDMA and AP have reported total monsoon-related deaths to 178 since June 26.

In Rawalpindi’s Chakri area, Chahan Dam overflowed that washed away a major bridge and swamping adjacent villages. Similar flash floods were reported in Chakwal and Jhelum. There are reports of dam embankment failures which caused widespread panic and damage to homes and farmlands.

Rescue Operations in Full Swing

•             Pakistan Army helicopters evacuated dozens from submerged zones including Rajar, Morgah, and Kalyal.

•             Rescue 1122 and district teams are running dewatering operations and distributing food to stranded families.

•             Section 144 has been imposed in several tehsils to prevent civilian movement in risk zones.

Public Advisory

The Met Office has issued advisory urging citizens in Rawalpindi and Islamabad to avoid travel through low-lying areas, especially near Nullah Leh, Swan River. The storm drains will remain on high flood alert.
