Pakistan, China agree to promote space cooperation

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have signed an agreement to enhance space collaboration and train the first Pakistani astronaut for a spaceflight to the Chinese Space Station.

The agreement was formalized in Islamabad in the presence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister described this as a remarkable gesture from the Chinese Government, further strengthening decades of collaboration in space technology and other key sectors.

Chairman of SUPARCO, Mohammad Yousuf Khan, highlighted Pakistan’s achievements in space technology. He mentioned that Pakistan currently has three operational observation satellites in orbit, with plans to launch four more satellites by the end of this year to enhance coverage.

Since 2011, Pakistan has successfully placed two communication satellites in geostationary orbit. Additionally, the Pakistan-MMI satellite, launched in May last year, marks a significant step towards achieving a digitally connected Pakistan.

Chairman SUPARCO emphasized that the Human Spaceflight Initiative is a testament to Pakistan’s commitment to advancing space science. The Pakistan Astronaut Program will facilitate the selection, training, and eventual spaceflight of the country’s first astronaut to the Chinese Space Station.

He added that the Pakistani astronaut will conduct advanced scientific experiments in space. He described the Manned Space Mission as a scientific endeavor aimed at benefiting life on Earth while inspiring young Pakistanis to pursue careers in space exploration and innovation.

This agreement is expected to enhance national capabilities, encourage scientific breakthroughs, and inspire a new generation of space scientists and engineers in Pakistan.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar expressed optimism that Pakistani astronauts, after completing their training, will travel to the Chinese Space Station within a year.

He reaffirmed that the Shehbaz Sharif-led government is prioritizing space exploration and technological advancement, ensuring Pakistan’s active participation in the global space industry.
