Indonesian Embassy in Islamabad Celebrates 79th Independence Day

ISLAMABAD: The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Islamabad hosted a grand and welcoming diplomatic reception to commemorate the 79th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day at the Islamabad Marriot Hotel.

Federal Minister for Housing and Works, Hon. Mr. Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada was the Chief Guest at the event, while State Minister for Finance, Revenue, and Power, Hon. Mr. Ali Pervaiz Malik also attended. Around 400 guests from various backgrounds, including members of the diplomatic community, Pakistani government officials, politicians, business leaders, media representatives, and others, contributed to the vibrant and well-attended celebration.

The Indonesian Chargé d’Affaires, diplomats, and their families, dressed in traditional attire and colorful ethnic garments, infused a lively and authentic Indonesian atmosphere into the gathering. The venue was elegantly adorned with floral displays, Batik fabrics, and cultural decorations, enhanced by posters of the founding figures of both nations, President Sukarno of Indonesia and Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah of Pakistan. The decorations harmoniously combined symbolism and beauty, honoring the shared values of the two countries.

The reception’s theme, “New Nusantara, Advanced Indonesia,” referred to the extensive developments in infrastructure and connectivity across the Indonesian archipelago, including the new capital city of Nusantara (IKN). Under the current administration of President Joko Widodo, Indonesia has prioritized enhancing the movement of goods, people, and services through significant investments in infrastructure.

“Infrastructure initiatives throughout Indonesia are crucial, as the Government of Indonesia will ensure that no part of the nation is left behind. Enhancing connectivity and infrastructure is vital, not only for strengthening the economy but also for fostering national unity,” Chargé d’Affaires (CdA) Rahmat Hindiarta Kusuma stated in his remarks, dressed in a traditional Javanese outfit inspired by the youth movement during the struggle for independence.

“While Indonesia may not yet be a role model, it serves as an example of political stability, national unity, and economic success,” he added, emphasizing these points during his extensive visits to various chambers of commerce, universities, madrasahs, and think tanks in Pakistan.

Addressing economic collaboration, CdA Rahmat Hindiarta highlighted that Indonesia and Pakistan possess considerable untapped potential in trade and investment. He invited the Pakistani business community to participate in the Indonesia and South and Central Asia Business Forum (INASCA) on 7 October 2024, as well as the esteemed Trade Expo Indonesia from 9-12 October 2024.

In his remarks, Federal Minister Pirzada emphasized that Indonesia and Pakistan are two friendly nations that share strong perspectives on regional and international issues as members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and other global organizations. He expressed optimism that bilateral relations, including economic cooperation, will continue to expand. “On behalf of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, I extend my congratulations to Indonesia on its 79th Independence Day,” Minister Pirzada concluded.

The diplomatic reception began with a moment of silence to remember and honor those who have sacrificed their lives in Gaza, the occupied Palestinian territories, and neighboring countries in the region. The program included the national anthems of Indonesia and Pakistan, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony and a documentary video about Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara, on Kalimantan Island.

Another major highlight was the “Saman Dance” from Indonesia’s Aceh Province, performed with rhythmic precision by a row of dancers who were Indonesian students in Islamabad. They captivated the audience with synchronized hand clapping, chest slapping, and elegant movements, showcasing Indonesia’s rich cultural identity. The performance received enthusiastic applause, with the audience expressing admiration for Indonesia’s artistic and cultural heritage.

One of the evening’s standout features was a mesmerizing fashion show that displayed Indonesia’s vibrant cultural heritage. Traditional garments featuring unique textiles, colors, motifs, and symbolic designs enchanted the audience, providing a vivid insight into the country’s diverse traditions. Guests also enjoyed a lavish banquet that included both local and international cuisine, with Indonesian signature dishes and beverages taking center stage.

“I thoroughly enjoyed your event. The programs, performances, food, and everything here are outstanding and well-organized,” praised Mr. Sardar Yasir Ilyas, CEO of Centaurus, as the Gemu Famire dance began. This dance has become a highlight of Fashmob’s Indonesian promotional activities abroad.
