ISLAMABAD: The installation of advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters, which are equipped with cutting-edge technology and modern features, is progressing swiftly in two operational regions of IESCO: Rawalpindi City and Rawalpindi Cantt.
Project Director for AMI, Mohsin Raza Gilani, provided details about the initiative, stating that in the first phase, AMI meters are being deployed in the Rawalpindi City and Rawalpindi Cantt areas. So far, 275,000 outdated electricity meters have been replaced with AMI meters. It is expected that by the end of 2026, a total of 1.2 million old meters in these two regions will be upgraded to AMI meters.
Gilani further mentioned that AMI meters have already been installed in several areas, including Korang, Swan, DHA 2, Chaklala, Chandi Chowk, F Block, Saham, Khayaban Sir Syed, Gangal, Fiaiza, Murree Road, PWD, National Police Foundation, and Media Town. The project is on track to meet the target of replacing 1.2 million meters within the planned timeframe.
He added that the introduction of AMI meters will facilitate automatic meter reading, improve control over electricity theft, prevent system overloading, reduce incidents of transformer and meter damage, and ensure prompt handling of customer complaints in IESCO’s service areas.
