Punjab to Launch 240 Electric Buses in 24 Districts

Lahore: The Punjab government has decided to launch 240 electric buses in 24 districts, a major shift in public transport priorities.
Chief Minister Pujab Mariam Nawaz announced the immediate dispatch of 240 electric buses to 24 southern districts. Each district will receive 10 buses in the first rollout phase.

The decision was made in a high-level review meeting held on Saturday.Maryam Nawaz chaired the session focused on electric buses and urban transit reforms.

She said all districts are equal in development priority.She declared that Punjab’s rural and urban divide must end. “No project should favour big cities alone,” she added.Sazgar set to produce electric 2 wheelers

CM instructed authorities to align infrastructure with people’s actual needs. Officials briefed her on the implementation timeline. They confirmed 240 electric buses will reach southern districts first.

Another 500 buses will be added in Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi, and Bahawalpur from August to October. A further 600 buses will arrive by December 2025.

Out of these, 400 e-buses will be deployed under the Punjab Clean Air Programme. These will cover Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, and Nankana Sahib.Maryam Nawaz directed planners to finalise routes based on public commuting data.

She ordered that all delays in public utility work must be eliminated. The meeting also reviewed Gujranwala’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. Officials confirmed that the BRT corridor will stretch 22 kilometres.

It will run from Rahwali to Aimanabad.The corridor will include 28 stations across key points. Eighty feeder buses will connect surrounding areas to the BRT line. Four electric bus depots will support the system.

Bus arrivals will occur every eight minutes on this route.Maryam Nawaz asked for smart traffic solutions on the BRT network. She directed feasibility work for extending the line to Gakhar Mandi.

Progress on Faisalabad’s Red and Orange Lines was also discussed. The Red Line will span 23.4 kilometres with 24 stations.It will serve more than 185,000 passengers per day.

The Orange Line will cover 29 kilometres and include 21 stations. It will carry an estimated 111,000 daily commuters.The CM has approved an extension of the Red Line route.

It will now connect Faisalabad Industrial Estate to Salami Chowk. Maryam Nawaz said every transport initiative must be people-first.

She stressed that clean, efficient mobility is essential for growth.The Transport Department has been asked to submit detailed milestones.No delay will be tolerated in any ongoing or new project.

Maryam Nawaz concluded by calling the e-bus rollout “a transport equaliser for the forgotten districts.”
